Simple, natural baby photography has grown in popularity over the past few years and it’s a trend that will continue to grow this year. Scandinavian design will continue to have a huge influence in lifestyle and interiors, which means that white & neutral styled baby photography will fit perfectly. As the first generation to have grown up with social media influencing us we have become more passionate about promoting honesty and authenticity, which reflects in this natural baby photography style and is why we believe it will see huge growth next year.
What is natural baby photography?
To me, natural baby photography means exactly that - photographing your baby in a natural way, simply capturing the essence of them. It’s not about props, buckets, baskets or flowers but ALL about baby. It’s simple styling and natural posing, it’s focussing on connection instead of adding distracting elements. It’s highlighting the little details, not hiding them with caterpillar outfits or big hats. I believe that natural baby photography is purely focussing on baby and creating beautiful images without the need for adding anything extra - they are enough!
Why is natural baby photography so popular?
As with anything, trends come and go, and this is no different for newborn & baby photography. In the 90’s putting babies in flower pots was big news, then came the animal outfits and the cake smashes. As trends become more popular, more photographers adapt to accommodate these styles and they quickly become the ‘norm’. Natural baby photography has evolved over the past few years and now offers an alternative to these highly posed and accessorised photography styles for parents that prefer a more modern, simple approach to capturing their baby. It is completely baby-led, whether they are awake or asleep we follow babies lead and create beautiful portraits of them just as they are.
How does it fit with modern interior decor styles?
With Scandinavian design having a massive influence on interior decor trends over the past few years it makes sense that other industries would follow suit - fashion, events, furniture design etc. Characterised by simplicity and minimalism, Scandi-styled interiors are here to stay which is great news for us photographers that specialise in simple, natural baby photography as they go hand in hand. White or neutral studio set-ups perfectly compliment a modern, Scandi-inspired home meaning that this style of baby photography will continue to soar in popularity throughout 2022.
I’m used to seeing babies posed in buckets or dressed up as lions, how does natural baby photography differ?
First off, there are no buckets or animal outfits! Nor are there complicated poses or anything that doesn’t look completely natural. As a specialist in natural newborn & baby photography our approach is much more simple and relaxed. Sticking to a white/neutral colour palette helps tie in with the Scandinavian inspired styling, as well as photographing them in an ‘unposed’ way. This means that we simply use a large professional beanbag or white bed set-up and photograph baby as you would see them at home, whether asleep or awake, in poses that are natural, comfortable and safe. We also love to photograph baby with parents and siblings, again keeping it natural and relaxed. You won’t often hear us asking clients to look at the camera, instead focussing their attention on baby and each other, evoking beautiful, honest emotions and genuine moments of happiness. This, to me, is the key to natural baby photography - keeping it authentic and honest.
