Simple Newborn Photography - What Is It?
What is simple newborn photography?
Simple maternity and newborn photoshoots are anything but simple, so why do I describe them as such?
When I say simple I mean in styling - baby on a white blanket or in your arms. I mean simplicity in approach, without using props or complicated posing.
This simple style of photography is actually pretty tricky to achieve and has taken me years of training, practise and tweaking to get to where my work it is now.
Free from distractions
You’re paying good money to have your baby photographed, so let’s focus on that shall we? Unless you’ve raised your baby in a greenhouse, putting them in a flowerpot isn’t going to be relevant. As far as I know, carrying babies around in buckets has never been a thing, so let’s leave those at home (the bucket not the baby!)
There is beauty in simplicity. Baby is enough, right?
White & neutral styling
White is an absolute ball ache to work with as a photographer, as without the correct lighting it can so easily end up as a washed out grey. Preserving skin tones can have me screaming at my computer when editing and maintaining depth without losing the bright whites can quite honestly have me questioning my life choices sometimes!
Without getting too technical, white is not an easy colour to work with as a photographer. So why do I do it?
Because it is the most delicious colour for newborn photography. There is something so pure about seeing a tiny baby in a white baby grow or asleep on a white blanket, don’t you think?
It’s also timeless. It doesn’t matter what colour your living room walls are or if you re-decorate the nursery, these neutral tones will still look perfect on any wall.
Unposed posing
As well as simple, white styling it also applies to the way I pose my clients. They are looking for a more natural look to their photos so I keep the posing simple, allowing them to interact and connect as they normally would. Holding baby in their arms, kissing their newborn softly on the head, holding baby’s tiny hand…you get the idea.
So next time you see me describe my photography as simple, please remember that there is nothing easy or quick about any of it! It is years of experience, expertise in natural posing and knowledge of editing whites without losing depth.
