What to wear to a family photoshoot
Family Photoshoot Outfit Ideas
If you’re thinking about booking a family photoshoot - do it! 100% do it. I’ve never met anyone that regrets having a photoshoot but plenty that regret NOT doing it.
But what do I wear?
That’s the easy bit! As an experienced family photographer I’m here to help you work out what to dress your family in for their photos…
Think about what look you are going for with your photoshoot. What kind of images are you hoping to achieve?
Warm, boho style?
For this style you’re going to want to stick with natural colours and textures.
Colours: Creams, browns, burnt/rust oranges
Textures: Lace, chunky knits, natural fibres.
Simple, crisp images?
Keep it simple - whites & creams. You can’t go wrong with chinos and a white shirt.
Co-ordinate, don’t match.
Twinning is cute, don’t get me wrong. But to achieve beautifully styled family photos try to pick outfits that compliment rather than match. Pick 2 or 3 colours from the same colour palette and select outfits in those colours.
For example: Spring Cream, dusky pink and olive green.
Olive green shirt & linen trousers.
Dusky pink skirt with cream top.
Olive green dress.
Cream baby grow with a dusky pink cardigan.
Cream t-shirt with olive green shorts.
Things to avoid
Large logos or patterns
Bright/neon colours
Other things to think about
Shoes: Think about where your photoshoot is taking place.
In the forest you’ll want comfortable shoes that are easy to walk in.
On the beach you might want something that will slip on and off easily if you fancy dipping your toes in the sea.
In the studio, you might be asked to take your shoes off so think about what colour socks you’re wearing (not red!)
Jewellery: If you have any sentimental pieces then wear them, how lovey to have them captured in your family photos?
An outfit can be completed with a simple statement necklace or pair of earrings, so don’t forget to add those final details.
Hats: It depends what look you’re going for. The right hat can look awesome, depending on the setting and style of images you’re going for. I would avoid baseball caps at all costs - there just isn’t a place for them in your family portraits! (Harsh but true).
The most important thing to remember?
Wear something that you feeling amazing in! You want to feel as comfortable as possible to help you relax in front of the camera.
